Medgar Evers College Free Entrepreneurship Training Program

The School of Business, in collaboration with the Adult and Continuing Education Program at Medgar Evers College, proudly presents the College's second annual Entrepreneurship Training and Support Services program, which is free and open to the public.

The Entrepreneurship Training and Support Services program is funded by a Workforce Development Initiative (WDI) grant from the City University of New York (CUNY) and is designed to address the disproportionately high unemployment levels among Blacks and Hispanics in Central Brooklyn through the creation and support of sustainable career pathways for aspiring and existing Black and Hispanic entrepreneurs through entrepreneurship training and support services.

"The College is delighted to receive funding from CUNY's Workforce Development Initiative (WDI) for a second year of Entrepreneurship Training and Support Services," said Dr. William L. Pollard, President of Medgar Evers College. "The School of Business and Adult and Continuing Education have done a tremendous job in developing this exciting program with support from community partners such as the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACCI) and Sovereign Santander Bank. We anticipate yet another successful year of entrepreneurship training for the community."

About The Program

Now entering its second year, the program intends to build upon its successes from year one and to incorporate new training and support services to prepare and strengthen Brooklyn-based entrepreneurs. During its first year, the program served a total of 48 participants, 34 of whom were aspiring entrepreneurs and 14 of whom were existing entrepreneurs. The program exceeded expectations and provided fledgling entrepreneurs with the knowledge and skills needed to start a new business or enhance their existing business. Participants developed new business relationships, signed new business contracts and created new jobs.

"The WDI Program at Medgar Evers College provided me with the necessary information and tools I needed to formalize and incorporate my natural beverage business, an opportunity for me to become self-reliant and obtain financial independence," said program participant Sharon Alves, founder of WoNaLi Natural Beverage, LLC.

The program will run from November 2011 through April 2012 and will include 15 modules of expert training in entrepreneurship and support in developing and refining a business plan. Other components of the program will include Business mentorship and a Market Day Event to be facilitated by CACCI to raise awareness of participating entrepreneurs' business services and products, as well as a free workshop on "Coaching Essential Entrepreneurship Skills" to be provided by NonProfit HelpDesk. Additional support will be provided by Sovereign Santander Bank, the Kings County District Attorney's ComALERT program, and the Brooklyn/Queens Chapter of New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants.
